What is Nowruz?
Nowruz is the Persian/Iranian New Year celebration, which takes place at the start of spring. It’s all about fresh beginnings and welcoming the warmer weather. People clean and decorate their homes before the big day, which lasts for 13 days. Some things they do during Nowruz include:
- Setting up a Haft-Seen Table: They put seven special items on a table to represent different parts of life.
- Celebrating Chaharshanbe Suri: Before Nowruz, there’s a fun festival with bonfires and jumping over flames to feel cleansed.
- Spending time with Family: They get together for meals, exchange gifts, and wish each other well.
- Enjoying the Outdoors: People go for picnics, walks, and visit parks to enjoy the new season.
- Eating Special Foods: They cook dishes like Sabzi Polo Mahi and Ash Reshteh to enjoy during the celebrations.
Nowruz is a time to feel connected, think about the past year, and look forward to the future. It’s an important part of Persian/Iranian culture and is celebrated by many other communities worldwide.
