Fox and Firkin Day into Night Festival
On Saturday 8th of August, we had the pleasure of providing catering for the Day into Night festival at the Fox and Firkin in Lewisham. It was a sunny Saturday but thankfully not too hot, and getting there in the early afternoon meant that we got to watch the event grow and bubble up as the heat of the day gently rose. The Fox and Firkin have a deceptively spacious outdoor space, which one would not assume to be there, just off the busy streets it is nestled between.
This spaciousness allowed for us to offer many of our products and food options, with three tables kindly having been set up for us. On one of the tables, we had some of our popular products, including our jams, mamul biscuits, date truffles and our tea towels. On the other two tables, we had our selection of food being prepared by our talented chef team. Our chefs on this day were Kevin from Albania, Tin and Kin from Myanmar, and Mehdi from Iran. They handled the busy day excellently, and we were able to come up with a ticketing system on the fly using a pack of raffle
numbers to create an almost fast food like level of efficiency. It felt really good to be able to all work as a team to ensure we provided good quality food and service.
For food, we were offering our Chicken Shawarma and felafel wraps, home-made samosas, and humitas made by an Ecuadorian chef. We also trialled a new dish, the Plateful Bowl, which is a combination of many of the much-loved dishes we have served for years here at Plateful. It includes a base of Vermicelli Rice, which is accompanied by our Okra Stew, a couple felafels, assorted salad with beetroot, salad leaves, gherkin strips, boiled chickpeas, and cucumber, and the whole bowl is
garnished with coriander. This was well received on the day, and it was fun to watch people’s faces as they saw how generous the portion was for the bowl – we are called Plateful for a reason!
The event was well organised, with a few different stalls dotted around selling home-crafted goods, and arts and crafts stations for children and families to get involved with. The fundraising event was not only fundraising for us, but also for the Lewisham donation hub which is an excellent initiative to help pre-loved goods find new homes for people who can use them. We all have things that having been lying around our house for years which don’t ever get to see the light of day, so next time you see that lonesome object, maybe consider taking it over to the donation hub.
As well as stalls, there were many talented musicians and DJ’s which took the stage and provided some immaculate vibes for everyone to enjoy. It was a day filled with good energy and fun, and we are grateful to the Fox and Firkin and the organisers of the festival for giving us the opportunity to be a part of it all and for helping us fundraise.
